Rabbit Starvation

It’s a Miracle?

April 19, 2008 · 2 Comments

My brain is composed of at least 30% music lyrics. And at least 12% of those are songs I learned during 18 years of faithful church of Christ attendance (including church service 3x/week, youth group outings and summer camp).

Here’s a delightful jewel I found myself humming the other day:

What drives the stars without making a sound?
Why don’t they crash when they’re spinning around?
What holds me up when the world’s upside down?
I know, I know it’s a miracle!

Who tells the ocean where to stop on the sand?
What keeps the water back from drowning the land?
Who makes the rules – I don’t understand,
I know, I know it’s a miracle!

It’s a miracle just to know,
God is with me wherever I go.
It’s a miracle as big as can be,
That He can make a miracle of me!

Who shows the birds how to build a good nest?
How can the geese fly so far without rest?
Why do the ducks fly south and not west?
I know, I know it’s a miracle!

When a spring makes a brook and a brook makes a stream,
The stream makes the river water fresh as can be,
Who puts the salt in when it gets to the sea?
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
IT’S A MIRACLE!

OK, it’s a cute little kids’ song, I guess. But what bothers me about it now is that it kind of encapsulates the Christian cop-out of “God works in mysterious ways.” That is, when we don’t have an answer for something, or when science has not yet explained a natural function in the universe, obviously it’s evidence of God.

Most of the simple questions in this song don’t even fall into the as-yet-unexplained-by-science category, which makes this little ditty even more inane. Hey, kiddos, when you’re curious about the natural world, don’t do research—just shut off your brain and say, “I know it’s a miracle!”
